US Education Department is investigating dozens of colleges for programs its says may be discriminatory. The programs target disadvantaged students.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, who oversees the Education Department, reinforced his support Thursday for the state law, which he said protects vulnerable children who are uncomfortable discussing their sexual orientation with their parents from being “outed” by the school.

The Trump Administration announced an investigation Thursday into the California Department of Education over a state law that bans teachers and other school staff from being required to disclose a child's gender identity to their parents.
