Dauphin Island wrapped up the first part of a dune restoration project that would make the island’s East End Beach 350 feet wider.

Without it -- Dauphin Island’s West End will continue to see the beach erode. They’ll also see coastal protection becoming more compromised from future hurricanes.

A project to restore the east end beach and dunes on Dauphin Island brought in a million cubic yards of sand.

Dauphin Island, Alabama, has no water parks or mini-golf courses, and only two high-rise hotels. What it does have is a more natural beach town vibe.

Dauphin Island officials are proposing a short-term rental ban on the east end of the island. If approved, the ban would only allow vacation rentals on the west end of the island.

“The East End restoration should get underway within the next couple of weeks,” said Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier. “The contractors are assembling the dredge pipeline.
