WASHINGTON (TNND) — To ring in the new year, five states are prohibiting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from being used to purchase soda, soft drinks and candy.
Starting in 2026, Florida SNAP recipients will no longer be able to use federal assistance for certain "non-nutritious items like soda and candy."
SNAP recipients who work and earn more than $217.50 per week before taxes can still receive their benefits. Everyone else must submit documentation proving they volunteer or work 20 hours a week or lose their benefits after three months.
There are just a few more days for people to buy soda in Utah using their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
Gov. Mike Braun first announced these planned changes alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr. earlier in 2025. The new SNAP rules take effect Jan. 1.
Oklahoma is delaying new SNAP restrictions on candy and sugary drinks, pushing the start date to Feb. 15 to give retailers more time to prepare.
