Apple released its iOS 17.4 update for the iPhone on Tuesday. The update includes many new emoji, including a phoenix, shaking heads, and gender-neutral families.

As a result, iPhone owners often have to wait a few months to get their hands on the new characters. The emoji that arrived in Unicode 16.0 didn't hit iPhones until iOS 18.4 launched in March 2025.

This year, the Unicode Consortium, which decides these things, has announced that Unicode 17.0 will include at least nine new emoji, coming soon. And there’s one you might find very useful.
