The Supreme Court agreed on Friday to decide the legality of President Donald Trump's directive to restrict birthright citizenship in the United States, a contentious part of his efforts to curb immigration and a step that would alter how a 19th century constitutional provision has long been understood.

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a Texas Republican-backed redistricting map, giving the party a more favorable political landscape in the Lone Star State and a victory for President Donald Trump, who supported the plan.

The birthright case will be the second time the issue comes before the Supreme Court this year. Trump claimed victory in June when it blocked lower courts from halting his order nationwide, but that case did not squarely address the merits of the president’s move.
