Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told President-elect Donald Trump “Greenland is not for sale” during a phone call this week, according to a press release from her office, as Trump continues to express interest in acquiring the Danish territory.

Despite Trump’s fervent claims that Greenland’s 55,000 residents desire to join the US, both Denmark and Greenland’s local leaders have firmly rejected the idea of a sale.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has told Donald Trump that it is up to Greenland to decide on its future, following the US president-elect's provocative remarks about seizing the island.

President Trump wants Greenland, and he's reportedly making that very clear to its current ownership. The Hill reports that Trump had a "fiery" 45-minute phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Jan.

Trump made it clear that he was "serious" about acquiring Greenland, but Danish PM Mette Frederiksen rejected the idea outright, stating Denmark was not interested in "selling" the mineral-rich island.
