NEW YORK — (AP) — Marianne Faithfull, the British pop star, muse, libertine and old soul who inspired and helped write some of the Rolling Stones' greatest songs and endured as a torch singer and survivor of the lifestyle she once embodied, has died. She was 78.

Born in London in 1946 to a British military officer and an Austro-Hungarian Jewish baroness, Faithfull began her singing career in 1964, after being spotted by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, with the single As Tears Go By, written by the band’s Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

After moving in with Mick, in 1968 Marianne found out she was pregnant but tragically experienced a miscarriage at seven months - they had planned to name their daughter Corrina. Throughout the sixties and seventies, she battled heroin addiction, had a miscarriage and lost custody of her son Nicholas.
