A U.S. court of appeals has ruled in favor of a transgender woman who claims her constitutional rights were violated while she was detained at the El Paso County Detention Center and housed with male inmates.

An appeals court has ruled the El Paso County Jail violated the United States Constitution by housing a transgender woman with male inmates. The action also goes against a Trump executive order signed last month declaring there are only two sexes.

The ruling reversed a district court decision dismissing claims made by a transgender woman for over her treatment during pre-trial confinement at the El Paso County Jail in 2020.
