JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - On July 1, 2020, the old state flag flew for the final time above the Mississippi State Capitol.

In 2001, the North American Vexillological Association ranked Washington’s flag 47th out of 72 U.S. state, U.S. territorial, and Canadian provincial flags due to its complicated seal.

Mississippi, Minnesota and Utah recently adopted new flag designs. Massachusetts is considering a similar measure, while voters in Maine recently rejected a redesign plan.

Minnesota wasn't the first state to redesign its flag. There have long been calls for several southern states to scrap flags with ties to the Confederacy, Mississippi changed its flag and 2020.
