WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A federal judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Justice Department that accused the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago of unlawfully interfering with President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration.
U.S. Rep Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso, and Rep. María Elvira Salazar, R-FL, presented the Dignity Act 2025 on July 15.
The judge determined the state's policies are protected by the 10th Amendment, a blow to Trump's efforts to crack down on sanctuary jurisdictions.
U.S. District Court Judge Lindsay C. Jenkins for the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division said the Trump administration “lacks standing” to invalidate the state, city and county laws that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
A federal judge in Chicago dismissed a Trump administration lawsuit challenging sanctuary policies for immigrants in Illinois and Chicago.
The immigration debate in the U.S. will continue, but in the meantime, the ripple effects are creating new possibilities on Mexico's side of the border.
