LA SAL, San Juan County — No injuries were reported, but a fire engine was damaged when a massive "fire vortex" formed within a fire burning in southeast Utah over the weekend. A large vortex or "firenado" formed over the Deer Creek Fire in San Juan County, Utah over the weekend, officials said. Dramatic footage from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) showed flames from the fire being sucked up into a dense, swirling cloud of black smoke.

The Forsyth Fire, burning near Pine Valley in Washington County, grew another 775 acres, according to a July 11 update from the U.S. Forest Service. The spread occurred on the southern edge of the fire, where crews are focusing aircraft and ground efforts. Smoke also increased over the last 24 hours as winds pushed the fire into unburned fuel.

More than half of Utah is now in severe drought, but it is far from the only Western state experiencing dry conditions. Utah is on track for one of its driest and warmest years.
