Lawyers for Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student the Trump administration is trying to expel from the U.S. because of his role in campus protests against Israel, are expected to appear Friday before a judge in New Jersey as they fight for his release from federal custody.

Lawyers for the Justice Department and detained Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil are due in Newark federal court on Friday to argue over where his petition for release should be held.

"The Encampments" was directed by Michael T. Workman and Kei Pritsker and executive-produced by the rapper Macklemore.

Students and neighbors are suing the school, magnifying the broader complaint that institutions stifle free expression when they restrict access to public spaces following protests.

Faced with the Trump administration’s crackdown and Columbia University's concessions, students say protesting simply isn’t worth the risk.
