Tuesday marked the first unofficial beginning of the next Texas legislative session — and already lawmakers have begun filing bills they hope to pass when the Legislature goes into session on Jan. 14.

Lawmakers in the Texas House and Senate can begin filing bills for the 2025 session on Tuesday, giving a first glimpse into topics they want to tackle.

Preparations for the 89th Texas legislative session began Tuesday as Texas lawmakers started to file bills they hope will become laws in 2025.

From no-interest college loans to suing migrant labor housing facilities, Texas legislatures have a lot to talk about this legislative session.

Senate Bill 150, filed by Menéndez and Senators Carol Alvarado, César Blanco, Molly Cook, Sarah Eckhardt and Roland Gutierrez, would amend state law to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. It also would add provisions to block discrimination on the basis of military service.

Texas lawmakers have filed several cannabis policy reform bills for the 2025 legislative session, including a bill that would legalize and regulate marijuana for adults.

The Legislature meets biennially, meaning lawmakers have had a full year to brainstorm ideas for new legislation. Only a few hundred bills are passed each year by both the GOP-led House and Senate, meaning the vast majority of bills filed Tuesday will ultimately fall by the wayside.

Some of the first bills filed this year targeted border security as Republicans look to bolster immigration enforcement under a new Trump administration.
