A man was swept away while fishing and dozens of other people were injured as strong winds and rain battered the island.

On Wednesday, Typhoon Podul reached eastern Taiwan. The storm brought heavy rain and strong winds. Public services were brought to a standstill and significant damage was caused in several parts of the country.

Typhoon Podul has crossed southeastern Taiwan, where schools and government offices were closed to wait out the storm.
