On the opening day of free agency, they acquired Jakob Chychrun in exchange for Nick Jensen and a draft pick, giving the team another offensive defenseman who can complement John Carlson on the top pairing and provide another power-play quarterback option.

ARLINGTON, V.A. — Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin wasn't going to miss the first day of training camp for anything. That's why the 39-year-old was on the ice and all smiles for Day 1, but was limited in his practice and is "a little bit nicked up" to get things started, head coach Spencer Carbery said.

Scoring goals isn’t getting any easier, according to Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin. The 39-year-old started his 20th NHL training camp on Thursday with his eyes set on Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goal-scoring record.

Staged at McMullen Hockey Arena, Capitals rookie camp kicked off Friday and wrapped up Monday.
