There have been multiple freeway revolts in Atlanta, Georgia. The longest and most famous examples of Interstate opposition were against I-485 and the Stone Mountain Freeway through Intown Atlanta, lasting over 30 years, from the early 1960s until the final construction of Freedom Parkway on a small portion of the contested routes in 1994. Here's a sweet 1930s map of Atlanta (click here for larger version). I can't tell you how much I enjoy looking at a map of this area in which the most prominent features *aren't* the interstate highways that subdivide the city with chasms of asphalt (see below).

Nov 12, 2015 · Here's a map I prepared that is based on the original freeway plans for the Atlanta metro area. The red line is I-420, blue is I-475 and yellow is I-485. Of course, these plans were never fully realized, and I-475 was even moved to Macon for a new bypass there!

Jul 19, 2023 · Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte apparently aren't big enough to warrant ALL CAPS, but Pittsburgh and Cleveland are. L.A. & S.F. are the only western cities that do. I love old US highway maps! Bought a 1946 Rand McNally Atlas at an estate sale about 40 years ago. I keep it with my newer DeLorme Atlas/Gazetteers and a copy of Blue Highways.
