Proctor’s New Theatre, as it was originally called when it opened as a vaudeville theatre on November 23, 1914, was designed by architect Arland W. Johnson, and could seat 2,287 in its auditorium. The theatre itself was part of a five-story office building, with retail on the first floor.

It has been said that the Troy Theatre had a more elegant interior than nearby Proctor’s Theatre in Troy. The main lobby featured a grand marble staircase. The Troy Theatre was one of the city of Troy’s main movie palaces from its opening on February 21, 1923.

The American Theater opened as a movie house in downtown Troy in the early-1920’s. It had a virtual twin, the State (Rose) Theatre on 4th Street which was torn down in the 1960’s for a parking lot.

“The Griswold, like the Troy, Lincoln and American, will be operated in a pool with Fabian’s Proctor theatre. Named as manager for the Griswold was Jack Swartout, who moves over from the American. Al Newhall, of the Regent, Elmira, is the new manager of the American.”
