Karankawa Indians were likely our island’s first residents. They inhabited the Gulf Coast of Texas from Galveston Bay all the way to Corpus Christi Bay. In 1519, Spanish explorer Alonzo Álvarez de Pineda, of the Spanish Navy sailed a tiny ship through a Pass between two outlying islands, and into a great bay.
