In this video, Tod Mostero, chief winemaker of Dominus Estate, explains where and why the foundational vineyards of Napa Valley were planted. As he mentions, the vineyards were not planted on the hills or the valley floor, but on the foothills. The reason behind this is that in most cases, foothills tend to retain the water draining down the actual hills better than the sandier soils of the valley floor. These vines usually develop deep roots that allow them to make it through even a dry year. |
