2001 जून 1 (वि.सं. 2058 जेठ 19) मा भएको Nepalese royal massacre मा राजपरिवारका धेरै सदस्यहरूको मृत्यु भयो। आधिकारिक छानबिन अनुसार तत्कालीन युवराज Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah ले गोली चलाएका थिए भन्ने निष्कर्ष निकालिएको थियो। त्यस घटनामा राजा वीरेन्द्र, रानी ऐश्वर्या, राजकुमार निराजन, राजकुमारी श्रुति लगायत धेरै सदस्यको ज्यान गएको थियो। घटनापछि केही दिनसम्म देशभर शोक र अविश्वासको वातावरण थियो। धेरै नेपालीहरूले राजा वीरेन्द्रलाई शान्त स्वभाव, जनताप्रतिको माया र सरल जीवनशैलीका कारण अत्यन्त सम्मान गर्थे
