Carl Burton Stokes, a veteran, politician & ambassador. Carl was the first black mayor ever elected in a major US City, serving from 1967-71. After his time as mayor, Stokes became the first black news anchor in New York and eventually would work as an ambassador under the Clinton administration. Wilma Rudolph, an international sports icon and the first black woman to win 3 gold medals in a single Olympics. She also broke two Olympic records that same year (1960). Rudolph was recognized as the fastest woman in the world and quickly became a role model for black and female athletes everywhere.
